Evolved Energy Research (EER) recently released a second edition of the Annual Decarbonization Perspective (ADP) update in November 2023. The report investigates long-term deep decarbonization pathways for the United States. These are detailed technical blueprints for the transition of the US economy to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, including the production and use of energy, the land carbon sink, and non-energy greenhouse gas emissions. Join this webinar on March 26 to learn more about the report and how it impacts the future long-term decarbonization planning of the US. We are honored to welcome Chris Castro, US DOE, as our guest speaker. Register for the webinar today at: bit.ly/4a6F95C

SDSN USA invites members to express your interest in participating in our in-person Regional Decarbonization Pathways Workshop alongside the US Conference of Mayors this June! The workshop seeks to bolster connections between US universities and local governments, bringing together national academic experts and government leaders to share knowledge, chart sustainable pathways to zero emissions, and translate climate commitments into reality. As the US federal government accelerates efforts to mitigate climate change, state and local governments face the challenge of planning and implementing decarbonization actions within their jurisdictions. We hope this workshop will serve to strengthen partnerships between our SDSN USA network members and their local governments to support science-policy based policy-making, especially for those jurisdictions participating in the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program. If you're interested, please express your interest by 5 April 2024. Please visit the SDSN USA website for the concept note, expressions of interest form, and further information: https://lnkd.in/em7zQArQ

Last year following UNESCO”s lead on Transforming Education Summit, a couple of us organized our own Summit to continue to think about the meaning of “transformation” as it relates to us. The Summit was convened under SDSN USA with more than 700 participants spanning 3 days. The organizing committee has now published a paper on our learning from the rich discussion. Recommended reading — A Proposal for Key Criteria for Scaling the SDGs We are sharing the following article featured in the Brookings Institution, which focuses on a concerted push to achieve the SDGs through a practical scaling approach. Erik Engberg and Johannes F. Linn affirm that achieving the SDGs requires large, coordinated action, and suggest that for this to occur, specific guidance is required. They go on to define a set of six “key criteria” for all SDG projects and programs to adopt, based on a set of scaling principles, and share examples of country platforms and multi-phase projects that can be pathways to achieving scale. Recommended reading — The US is leaving millions behind: American exceptionalism needs to change by 2030 We are sharing the following opinion piece by SDSN USA Co-Chair, Sarah E. Mendelson, featured in the Brookings Institution, which focuses on the challenges “American exceptionalism” presents for the United States in achieving the 2030 Agenda. When the SDGs were adopted by the global community in 2015, “leave no one behind” became a framework “that recognizes development happens everywhere—not just in the Global South or in ‘developing’ countries.” Since the pandemic, American socioeconomic inequities have been raised to the surface along with American double standards. Amb. Mendelssohn explores this fascinating topic, as well as how the United States can change in order to pursue and embrace the 2030 Agenda.
